Q: How do I Attach Files in my Journal?

A:This is a question that often our students stumble across. Attaching files is a common way of sending your work to be marked by your online teacher. It consists of:

  1. Creating the file using a word processor (Word, Notepad) or spread sheet program (Excel)
  2. Browsing for the file in the Journal
  3. Saving the Journal
1. Creating the file

Whenever you find in your journal questions such as:

It implies that you must first create the document using a word processor program (Word, Notepad) or spread sheet (Excel) or if you had scanned a file then the image file in a jpg format. Make sure you also save the file to a known location. The "My Documents" folder is a good place to store the file however you can save it anywhere as long as you are sure to be able to find it again.

2. Browsing for the file

Clicking on the "Browse" button will open the following window

Basically, all this window wants is the file you worked on step 1 or need to attach. By default it shows you the contents of your desktop. You can change to the location of where this window will look for the file by using either the shortcuts to "My Documents" on the left side or using the drop down box beside the "Look in: ..... " field. This is why it is strongly suggested to save your file on a known location.

For example, if I have saved the file into the "My Documents" folder under the name "ENG 4C Question 2.1.4" then below is a picture of the "Choose File" window pointing at the "My Documents" folder and with the file "ENG 4C Question 2.1.4" highlighted.

Clicking on "Open" will make the "Browse" window disappear and back in the journal you will have the file name added to the question box.

3. Saving the journal

You are almost done, at this point; the file name is on the question box. In order to send it, you must click on the "Save" button on the journal.

To make sure the file was successfully transferred, please double check that the question has now a link to the file just above it. It should say "Last Stored Version........"

That is all to attaching files. Please do not delete the original file you worked on until you complete the course. Sometimes you may have to resubmit the file if the teacher has trouble opening the file.
